Meditation is like anything else in the world; it takes PRACTICE!

Some of you have probably seen the movie “Eat. Pray. Love.” or read it. Remember the scene where she attempts to meditate and only lasts a few seconds? Some people give up entirely after that point!

Later in the movie/book, she is fully enveloped in her meditations! It takes LOTS of practice, but there are a few ways to can help yourself get better, faster!

Tip #1: Breathe

A lot of people don’t bother to focus on their breathing; they just breathe normally. Don’t. Take long, deep inhales through your nose, and long, silent exhales through your nose.

Tip #2: Make it a ritual

Do it the same time everyday, and make sure people know to not bother you. Keep your phone far away! I personally meditate best in the mornings with a warm sunrise (I bet you can guess I’m not a winter person!), and my family knows to let me be so I may focus.

Tip #3: Let frustration happen

It will happen. You’ll be upset you can’t empty your mind or you can’t stop thinking to yourself. Just inhale, notice the frustration, and exhale it away!

Tip #4: Stretch, stretch, stretch!

Stretching makes your muscles and ligaments looser, therefore you sit or lie more comfortably. Try doing some basic yoga before you meditate; it will make a world of difference! Plus, if you do yoga, you already start the process of focusing deeply.

Tip #5: It’s not like the movies

You do not have to sit cross legged with your thumb and forefinger touching with your hands resting on your knees. You do whatever makes you feel comfortable and centered.

 

Mediation is hard work, and you should never give up! Keep trying everyday, and someday you’ll get it. I promise I had to do it, too!
